Has anyone here done them before? My Uncle was just put in a nursing home last month and has Alzheimers. I have read where these quilts are great for them. I have a major fabric stash, so this is a perfect way to use it up!

So does anyone have any cute embroidery ideas that I could incorporate on a couple of blocks? You ladies and gents are so creative here and I would love any ideas. :D

I plan on making several for his nursing home and some for local ones. His of course will have his name put on it. Not that he even remembers it or any of us anymore. :(

Here is a link for the tutorial I am using (adding photos like the second link):

I like the strings and hanky on this one:

I'm in the process of making similar quilts en mass that are for traumatized children. The approach is very similar. I have used denim from donated jeans to do my embroidery, and then use scraps to make crazy quilt blocks so that it ends up as a checkerboard type layout of crazy patches and embroidered denim squares. With the crazy patches, I put on a variety of threads and laces as the decorative aspect associated with the crazy patches. For the embroidery, I use a wide variety of designs. Some applique, some mylar, some fringe, etc. It is a mesmerizing and complex quilt, but I've found that it attracts attention of just about everyone who views it. My sewing club members all had to "feel" the last one I worked on because it just begs to be touched. My husband has Alzhemiers, and I find him examining the quilts I work on. One more aspect that I add to my quilt is weight. Traumatized children often need that extra weight to remind them that they are securely wrapped and safe. So in addition to the denim and backing, I add a layer or two of jersey knit as batting. It works beautifully. I can post a picture of one if you would like.

I think this is a lovely thing to do. My dad had Alzheimer's and it's such a sad and cruel illness, I wish I'd known about these quilts then.

Hi, I made a similar one for my son with autism. Just used up the scraps around the house.
