Hey everyone. I am trying to find a pea soup recipe. I remember having this when I was a kid and I loved it. I remember my dad making it with ham bones, and it had pieces of ham going through the soup. But dad has since then passed, and I never got the recipe. Anyone know of where I can find one like this, or if you have one and are willing to share with me that would be great.
Also~~another quick question. We had ham on thanksgiving, a regular ham it wasn't frozen or anything. After dinner, I took all the meat off the bone, and put the bone in the freezer (for this soup) Is it still safe to use the bone, because it has been awhile. Hubby says yeah, but I am always the leary one when it comes to food.
Thanks so much
Stacy

I'm not sure I can help you too much but yes, the ham bone should be fine as long as you froze it. I have made pea soup many times but don't really have a recipe.......I'm a 'little bit of this and little bit of that' kind of cook! I always used more ham than just the ham bone but the bone is a good source of flavor. You can also used smoked pork hocks (which is what I normally used)

Big kettle, dried peas, ham bone, onion and any seasonings, water to cover all and simmer for a long time till the peas are tender. I think I also chopping some carrots and potatoes to add to it. I hope someone will jump in here. This really sounds lame.......my soup was always really yummy but like I said.......no recipe and it's been a long time since I've made it. I do have a package of peas in the cupboard now......figuring I would make some again this winter........just haven't done it yet.

Hope this helps and that I didn't lead you astray!!
Kay

Big pot, dried split peas, ham bone extra ham some chopped onion and seasionings. cover with water and cook slow ( 2-3 hrs) until tender ( stir occaisionaly may need to add water). I cook mine till thick but thats your prefrence. Now I,m hungery for some. :D Hope this is what your looking for.
Enjoy!

Thanks for all your help. I guess I will be playing around in the kitchen. Whats the worst that can happen, I may need to buy another bag of peas
Do I just get regular dried peas, or is there a special kind?

Yum! Just made a big crock pot full last week! This time I tried the whole peas.........it was very good. I also use chicken stock instead of water. Ham bone is first choice but if you do not have one then use lots of left over ham chopped. I add potatoes, carrots and celery and onion and salt and pepper and let it cook on low for 10-12 hours and then will take a masher and mash some to make it thicker. Then add 1/2 and 1/2 at the end of cooking..........some home made crusty bread and OUT OF THIS WORLD!

I make split pea soup all the time--even won second place in a soup contest :?: , if you can believe that!! Most people hate the sight of it. Very easy, just follow the directions on the bag but they do have to cook longer than they say to make it good. I add ham bone, ham, onion, can tomotoes and carrot & onions. Use a can of chicken broth as my secret ingredient. It's always good--yum yum!!
